Essaouira Mogador World Heritage Medina, fishing port and Atlantic beach.
The day trip to Essaouira from Marrakech is a very interesting day trip to the old port of Essaouira. Once feared as a haven for pirates, today it is one of the most fascinating cities on the Atlantic coast of Morocco. The city has not only a lively fishing port and a wild and windy beach, but also a beautiful souk where you can shop away from the hustle and bustle of Marrakech.
You will be picked up from your hotel or hostel in Marrakech before 8:00 and we will head through the breathtaking scenery of the R207 route to the coast. Along the way we will stop to see the argan trees where small goats climb on the low branches and feed. Sometimes there are up to 20 goats sitting on a tree. It is a fascinating spectacle and an absolute must when it comes to getting a photo opportunity. Also along the way we will stop at a women’s cooperative where argan oil is produced. The oil is extracted from the kernels of the tree and is a delicious accompaniment to a Moroccan bread meal or simply to season a pitta bread. The oil is also used as a beauty product for the treatment of skin and hair. Our day trip to Essaouira from Marrakech arrives at the resort and port city where you will see the vast expanse of the North Atlantic Ocean. The vibrant old town (medina) is a world heritage site and it won’t take you long to figure out why. Old brass cannons line the walls and ramparts protect the waterfront from ancient invasions. There are several modern cafes and restaurants in the port city and this updated culture combines very well with the history of the city. You will feel like you are drifting in a time machine as you move from a modern cafe to a shaky house in the medina in a few meters. There is a long dance on the promenade where a sandy beach welcomes swimmers and those who wish to relax in the sun on the golden sand of this charming city. To this end, you should bring with you swimsuit, sunscreen and a towel for your time at the beach. Our return trip will leave for Marrakech to return in time for 18:00. Once again you can enjoy the surrounding sunset as the sun begins to set in the late afternoon. Essaouira is a popular stopping point for most tourists visiting Morocco and you will understand why when you embark on this fascinating day trip to the coast.
