ALTERNATIVE ACTIVITY HOLIDAYS IN MOROCCO
City vacation add-on offering backcountry excursions
We offer visitors to the Sahara desert unique opportunities for active holidays in Morocco and immersion in Sahrawi culture beyond sunset camel ride and overnight in a desert camp. Extended flights from both Casablanca and Marrakech make the Moroccan Sahara more accessible for travelers with limited time.
We reward travelers who venture to little-known Erg Chigaga in southern Morocco with a unique experience in the Sahara Desert. This is one that combines breathtaking scenery, hospitality that goes above and beyond, and unexpected backcountry excursions through southern Morocco.
Offline activity holidays
Erg Chigaga is located within the Iriqui National Park. The location is away from the Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga, where busloads of tourists visit for a sunset camel trek and overnight in the desert, or even from Toubkal National Park, where trekkers scale Mount Toubkal.
Erg Chigaga offers the opportunity to enjoy a few days of unplugged glamping, wilderness camping and desert hiking.
The joy of traveling to this region is to slow down and experience the Sahara Desert. The silence, the Amazigh way of life, the canopy of stars lighting up the night sky and sunrises over the dunes combined with experiencing true hospitality and local culture make for an unforgettable adventure.
There is no light pollution here, as the nearest town is 60km away. This makes it ideal for night photography and stargazing. See below for details of our Morocco photography tour in this region.
Activities in the Sahara desert
Given the day trip options and the opportunity for cultural immersion, we encourage travelers to use Erg Chigaga as a unique base for active holidays.
Here are just some of the available options:
Camp setup under the big tamarisk trees in the oasis village of Erg Smar. You’ll doubt we’re still deep in the desert terrain, yet close to the dry bed of the Draa River where our co-owner Yahya Boulfrifi’s family once farmed.
Traveling a four day circular route to reach the remote Erg Zahar dune field which is little visited and offers astonishing views from its highest point across the erg. Erg Zahar truly represents a “sea of sand”.
Camel trek under palm trees through the old settlements of M’hamid on the banks of the Draa River. Stop for lunch in the shade once the palm trees give way to the head of the dunes to the west. Complete the loop back to M’hamid through the open desert terrain, or be guided up to Erg Chigaga.
Break away from civilization on a six-day hike through some of the lesser-visited parts of Iriqui National Park, accessed by following the southern reaches of the Draa River, and the remote Erg Zahar dunes south of Zagora.
Bake fresh bread with a nomadic family in the sand under the embers of the fire to enjoy with tea.
Remote picnic lunches in the shade of the trees, with far reaching views.
Let our local team guide you through the region. Our team are the latest generation to have grown up as children in the desert, previously practicing a lifestyle unchanged for centuries. Our parents kept farms and livestock in the desert when water was freely available. That way of life became unsustainable two decades ago when this region’s river (Draa) was dammed near its source and desert encroached on farmland.
