Our Morocco photography tour is open to photographers of all skill levels. Join us if you’re looking to sharpen your creative photography skills and travel to Morocco’s most captivating landscapes, from desert to coast.
Experience the contrast of the iconic cityscapes of Marrakech and Essaouira with the remote Saharan dunes and Anti-Atlas mountains near Tafraoute.
We organize our Morocco photography tour during the new moon period to maximize the opportunities for night photography.
We organize for you a camp under the Milky Way for 3 nights, with a wilderness camp near the canyon mountains of Iriqui National Park and two nights at Erg Chigaga Dunes.
Your tutor will make sure you get to the right place at the right time to take great landscape and cityscape photos, and will offer expert guidance throughout the tour.
Our Morocco photography tour is designed for all landscape photographers who love to explore and have fun off the beaten track. While we will definitely visit some famous and iconic places in Morocco (Marrakech, Essaouira, UNESCO site of Ait Ben Haddou, the Sahara), the majority of the photography tour will be spent in less visited but equally, if not the most beautiful areas.
Traveling in winter, we won’t be sharing those places with many other visitors, which will make the photographic adventure even more enjoyable.
For those interested in night photography/astrophotography, we have made sure to schedule the tour close to a new moon, so that you can experience and photograph beautiful night skies in the Sahara desert (aka Erg Chigaga dunes in the National Park of Iriqui). This location is 60 km from the nearest light pollution.
If you wish to join the tour, a good knowledge of your camera equipment is recommended. This way we will focus more on the creative part of photography and take full advantage of the unique landscapes and cityscapes we visit.
You should expect to wake up early to photograph the sunrise – in February, sunrise goes until 8am and the Milky Way will appear around 6am.
During our time in the desert we will hike and climb various dunes around the desert camp. The excursions can last from one to two hours – we can do several excursions a day. However, there’s enough flexibility to skip some of the longer hikes and instead photograph the dunes closest to camp. For the Tafraoute area it will be similar, with various scouting excursions throughout the day and later to reach our photo spots for sunset and sunrise.
Your expert local guides and tutor Michael who has already been to Morocco twice and explored the places beforehand will make sure you are well taken care of throughout the tour. While the goal of our Morocco photography tour is to take you to the right place at the right time to take great pictures, you will also receive instruction in landscape and cityscape photography techniques, such as using filters, focus or night photography, and get composition suggestions if needed. On top of that Michael always has an open ear for questions and is happy to share his knowledge.
DSLR or Mirrorless camera;
To get the most out of the tour, participants should bring both a wide angle and a telephoto lens. The long lens will be especially important in the Sahara desert. Good focal lengths for the long lens are 70-200, 70-300, or 100-400mm;
A fast wide-angle lens is required to photograph the night sky in the Sahara desert. Recommended are f/2.8 or faster. Note: There will be plenty of other photo opportunities where you don’t need a fast lens;
A tripod;
Spare batteries for our two days in the dunes of Erg Chigaga. The possibilities to recharge the equipment in the evening are limited;
Flashlights for our Sahara desert excursions;
Good hiking boots/boots for our hikes around Tafraoute;
Notebooks are optional for attendees who would like image critique and post-processing suggestions during our tour.
This will be an opportune time of the year to go on the wild photography tour of Morocco. We will camp in the Erg Chigaga dunes just after a new moon with clear night skies to view and photograph the stars above the Iriqui National Park. The Erg Chigaga dunes are one of the best places in Morocco to photograph the stars, being 60km from the nearest light pollution and uncrowded. We will see many stars and experience real nights in the desert in relative isolation.
